Glass as the secret to sustainability?
Those who are interested in zero waste quickly turn to glass, as it impresses with the fact that it can be reused time and again and thus reduces the ecological footprint enormously. Seven good reasons why glass is a really good choice ...
1. Glass has many, many lives.
Glass is 100% recyclable without any loss of quality. The high proportion of recycled glass used in the production of new glass products lowers energy consumption and cuts costs and raw materials. Each tonne of recycled glass saves 670 kg CO₂. In addition, the deposit return system means that glass bottles can be refilled up to 50 times before they are returned to the production cycle as recycled glass.
2. Glass creates trust.
As food packaging, in particular, glass enjoys a high level of popular confidence. Two surveys confirm this. The ‘Friends of Glass’ campaign surveyed over 17.300 Europeans. The result: 76% of those surveyed regard glass as the most environmentally friendly form of packaging – 50% up on 2008. Another European study, carried out by ‘InSite Consulting’, showed that 60% of Europeans prefer glass bottles to other forms of packaging when they have a choice.
3. Glass is so beautifully natural.
Glass is made almost exclusively from natural raw materials: the main ingredient is quartz sand. Soda reduces the melting point and lime gives the glass hardness, shine and durability. In contrast to other substances, these raw materials are available in sufficient quantities in nature and can largely be mined in Germany.
4. Glass is at home in Germany.
Glass is produced and sold locally. This avoids long transport distances – a bonus for the environment and the climate. Overall, glass provides around 54.000 jobs in the German economy – 500 of them at Noelle + von Campe.
5. Glass does not release anything.
The aspect of health should also be considered when it comes to assessing packaging. On this point, glass truly shines because of its inertness. Glass does not form any compounds with the contents, allows no migration and protects the product inside it like a treasure.
6. Glass is getting thinner.
20 years ago, glass containers weighed significantly more. Innovations in production have meant that glass has got lighter and lighter – so-called lightweight glass technology ensures that the strength of the packaging remains consistent. The benefit to the environment: the ecological footprint is reduced significantly by raw material and energy savings and by ‘easier’ transport routes.
7. Glass keeps things fresh.
Put fresh seasonal products in glass: boil them, preserve them, pickle them – traditional and yet right on trend at the same time. Because these methods are not just sustainable and ecological, the food is protected, remains rich in nutrients and aromatic thanks to the preservation process.
