Come on a voyage of discovery with us.
Every story begins somewhere. Ours starts in 1866 in Boffzen, a small village in the south of Lower Saxony. You can read about the successes and the crises that Noelle + von Campe has lived through here.
Hard times for Noelle und von Campe: some of the specialist workforce go to war, the supply of coal for the ovens is interrupted, food rationing leaves the remaining employees almost too weak to work, domestic demand stagnates, sales abroad collapse. Only after the war does production begin again.
For some decades, syphons have been in high demand because the pressurised containers make it possible to produce ever-popular soda water. Production is complex but very lucrative. In 1930 alone, 10.000 syphons are sold – to New York.
The glassworks had to make new investments in the years preceding this and gets into debt as a result – at the very moment of the world economic crisis in 1929. Bottlenecks arise. The wages of the 120 workers cannot be paid – on 31 October production in Boffzen is shut down.
The company is saved in the end by the powerful loyalty of the employees and citizens of Boffzen. They collect together their last savings, adding up to a total of 27,000 Reichsmarks. The glassworks is reopened on 22 May as Noelle + von Campe GmbH with 40 employees.
Production quickly becomes successful again, with 83 employees to rely on. In addition to preserving jars, milk bottles, flasks, suitcase and toilet bag glassware, many products for chemists are added: pill bottles and long-necked bottles made of brown glass.
As the war begins, Noelle und von Campe has to give up some of its space for the manufacture of grenades. The extent to which the company itself is involved in making armaments remains unclear. The fact is: production continues throughout the war and new products are even added in the form of yoghurt pots.
Production continued after a short shutdown in 1945 due to a shortage of coal. In October, production of 400.000 preserving jars was recorded, among other products. These were particularly popular in the period just after the war as many people were self-sufficient and would preserve foods for the winter.
Noelle & von Campe remains inventive: 10.000 schnapps glasses with a red calibration mark are brought out for the Hannover Trade Fair – a sales hit.
